The Ghana Women association, Berlin (GWAB) was formed in the year 2004 on the initiative of the then Ghana Ambassador to Germany, H.E Rowland Alhassan.
The main objective of the association is to bring Ghanaian women living in Berlin and Germany as a whole together. Our aim is to promote and sustain the cultural interest, welfare and the well-being of the Ghanaian women in Germany. The association is determined to bring change and development within the Ghanaian community in Germany.
The GWAB aspires to bring out and project the hidden potentials, knowledge, ideas, talents and skills of our women and translate these into meaningful contribution to our national development.
The association shares the belief of Dr. Aggrey that when a woman is empowered she is able to invest her knowledge and resources in her children to the benefit of the community at large.
We of the Ghana Women Association share a common purpose, forged by our common life experiences both in Ghana and here in Germany. We share also an authentic enthusiasm to make an impact on our community and to create a cultural awareness in our children in the diaspora.
On 19 May 2006 the Association celebrated its inauguration after been duly registered with the German Authorities. Community leaders and the general public came together not only to celebrate this inauguration but also to experience the rich culture of our dear nation Ghana. The goals of the association were highlighted and the founding members of the association were introduced.
During this ceremony, a symposium on Hypertension-its consequences, complications and management – was organized under the auspices of these doctors; Ofori-Nkansah, Charles Yankah and William Mends. In the year 2007, during the Ghana @50 celebration, our association organized a lecture, delivered by Dr. Mockenhaupt of the Institute of tropical medicine, Berlin on the topic “Your health is our concern.”
The focus of this talk was on malaria prevention.
On 28th June 2008 the GWAB organised a fundraising evening at the English Tee Garten, Berlin-Tiergarten. This occasion was graced by the presence of the Ghana Ambassador to Germany H.E. Ohemeng Kesse and the Lord Mayor of the district of Berlin-Tiergarten Dr. Hanke
The highlight of the event was a discussion on “how to help reduce maternal and infant mortality rate in Ghana.” A film portrait of the United Nations Millenium Goal documentary “Dead Mum don’t cry” was shown.
In her keynote address, the president of the association, Mrs Comfort Owusu-Boampong elaborated on some statistical data about infant and maternal mortality in the various regions in Ghana.
Mrs. Owusu-Boampong made a passionate appeal for funds to enable the association help minimize this mortality rate.
Highlights of the evening included spectacular performance by the Adikanfo cultural group. They entertained the guests to Adowa and Kente and the audience reacted with several rounds of applause.
Typical of the GWAB, guests were also treated to some of Ghana’s best cuisine and music.
